Almost unheralded in the UK (possibly because we focus on rums from the ex-colonies), Venezuela is renowned in the Caribbean for the 'seriousness' and quality of its rums. They are lighter and more subtle than the Jamaican rums but still can still take long ageing in oak barrels and deliver a big hit of flavour on the palate. The Venezuelan rums tend towards complex sugar cane, honey and peppery cinammon (delicious!) flavours rather than molasses but it varies widely from distillery to distillery. (40% abv) From the distillery's website: Diplomatico Reserva is an extraordinary blend of rums aged for up to eight years. It is a great balance of complex pot still rums and light column still rums, with all the pot still rums being distilled from sugar cane honeys. This rum is the ideal ingredient for sophisticated cocktails like Mai Tai, Mulata, Presidente. It can also be enjoyed neat or on the rocks. Colour: dark golden. Nose: plum, oak, nuts and vanilla aromas stand out. Mouth: clear traces of dried fruit, wood and vanilla giving this rum an extraordinary balance and a long lasting finish.
